FERMA

Steel roof truss design for AutoCAD

Sketch the roof plan, pick a truss type and set the loads. FERMA analyzes the truss, selects hollow sections, checks the welded joints, and draws the shop sheets with the parts list.

Sample FERMA drawings

Two sheets drawn by FERMA, labelled in English. The program writes the labels on the drawings in the language you choose.

FERMA drawing: elevation of a 26 m trapezoidal Pratt steel truss with member forces, joint numbers and dimensions
Truss elevation with member forces. Trapezoidal Pratt truss: span 26.00 m, 12 panels of 2167 mm, steel S355. Every member shows its ULS design force in kN (+ tension, − compression), every member group its hollow section, and the joints are numbered. The truss is made in two shipping pieces; the central vertical is bolted on site.
FERMA joint details sheet: truss supports with anchor bolts, welded truss joints, a bolted site splice and chord splices
Joint details. Truss supports on concrete with base plates and anchor bolts, welded joints of the chords and diagonals, the bolted end-plate site splice and the shop splices of the chords. Each detail carries the joint number used on the elevation.

What FERMA does

Designs the truss

Two-dimensional analysis by the stiffness method. It selects square and rectangular hollow sections, checks the welded joints and the deflection, and handles continuous trusses over intermediate supports.

Prepares fabrication

Trusses shipped in one or two pieces with bolted end-plate splices. Purlins in UPN or hollow sections on angle cleats. Weld sizes, bolts and anchors in the parts list.

Draws the sheets

Plot-ready sheets with frame and title block: elevation, roof plan with bracing, purlin layout, results and parts list, and node details at 1:10.

FERMA is a preliminary design tool. A licensed engineer must check the results before they are used.

Truss types
Seven truss types, picked from sketches. Web patterns: Pratt, Howe, Warren, and Warren with verticals.
Loads
Dead load, snow (symmetric and asymmetric), wind uplift and wind pressure normal to the roof, and the roof imposed load.
Starting point
Select a sketch of the roof plan in your drawing: lines are trusses, small marks are supports. FERMA reads the number of trusses, the spacing and the spans.
